FK Norway Exchange Candidates to Brazil and South Africa (3 positions)

GenØk – Centre for Biosafety is looking for 3 candidates for our FK Norway Exchange program to the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Florianopolis - Brazil (2 persons) and the North Western University, Potschefstroom – South Africa (1 person). This exchange is a reinforcement of our collaborative research in biosafety with the receiving institutions. We have already had one exchange with UFC in Brazil, while the South Africa exchange program is new.

The positions available are for 18 months, where 16 months has to be spent at the host institutions, and provides excellent opportunities to experience a new culture and learn about biosafety research in the context of Brazil or South Africa. The participants will be a part of relevant research projects related to consequences/effects of the application of gene technology and genetically modified organisms.

GenØk’s vision is safer use of biotechnology with emphasis on biological, social and ethical aspects of modern biotechnology.

The successful candidates going to South Africa and one of the two going to Brazil will have a background in biology (Bsc or Msc) or experience from laboratory studies/work (molecular biology, ecology etc). The second candidate going to Brazil will have a background/interest in science & technology studies, sociology or ethics. Both participants going to Brazil require basic knowledge in Spanish or Portuguese in addition to English. For South Africa, the language requirement is English. Age requirements are between 22-35 years. The planned start is in November 2011 or alternatively February 2012.

The centre focuses in particular on the environmental and health related consequences of the application of new bio- and nanotechnology. GenØk was founded in 1998 and is a non-commercial and independent research institute located in the research environment at the University of Tromsø and the Science Park.
